Fungateria is a new cross-disciplinary research project that seeks to develop a fully integrated structural and computational living substrate using fungal mycelium for the purpose of growing architecture.

To achieve this goal we have assembled a consortium comprised of architects (CITA), computer scientists/biophysicists (UWE), mycologists (UU) and industry experts in mycelium-based technologies (MOGU).

We will target two principle technological breakthroughs:

1. growing monolithic structures at metre length scales
2. functionilising the mycelium network to act as a computing device

The project will be funded for three years under an EU H2020 FET-Open grant agreement.

A minimal model of mycelium morphogenesis

Carlsberg Foundation grant awarded

The Carlsberg Foundation has awarded an infrastructure grant to Prof. Phil Ayres of coordinating partner, Royal Danish Academy. The grant will support the procurement of equipment to enhance the capabilities of the Academy's Biolab to produce and analyse microbially mediated materials, with particular focus on ELMs within the Fungateria project.

The FUNGATERIA project officially begins

Today marks the official start of the Fungateria project! Over the next 4 years, we will investigate the development of novel Engineered Living Materials (ELMs) using a co-culitvation approach combining fungi and bacteria.
